Hi! My name is Yuyan from Wuhan, China.

I am currently a fourth-year undergraduate student studying BSc Accounting and Finance.

I had an amazing experience during my International Foundation Year at the University of Leeds since I enjoyed the brilliant teaching resources, university facilities, wonderful extracurricular life, and the beautiful city itself as well. The campus is accessible and convenient to go to city centre and it is surrounding by green- we have pond that has ducks and fish near the Roger Stevens building and there are bunnies and squirrels everywhere on campus! They always make my day and enable me to recover from a tiring day of studying. Therefore, I decided to stay and continue my study in Leeds for my undergraduate degree.

This is my fifth year studying in University of Leeds, I enjoyed my time participating various events and meeting new people and making new friends. There are sport societies that enables me to make friends who have same interests and have fun playing sports together and academic societies which has given me great insight into career opportunities. I feel that I made the most of my university life on the aspect of studying and socializing.

I had a year in industry experience within Banking industry, which enables me to develop skills and knowledges within the industry and the exposure helps me to form some basic understanding of working life in general. At the applying stage, university provides loads of support including:

  • Free Careers Service that provides website and manual CV checks and gave out suggestions to tailor the role as well as mock one to one interview and gave out useful feedback afterwards.
  • The Careers Centre provides weekly newsletter to notify opening role opportunities and incoming career events and fairs.
  • As a Leeds University Business School student, there is an optional module available in my second year that helps me with the recruitment process from start to end. It also invites guest lecturers who are former placement students, alumni in relevant industry and some employers who are looking for summer interns and placement students.
  • Academic societies that have certain partnership with employers always hold talks and social events with corporates in the industry to enable students having exposure of the company culture and the work they do.

Coming back as final year student, the thing that Leeds attracts me the most is the Thai restaurants. We have Zaap Thai, Mommy thai and Thai Aroy Dee in centre area. Even for my placement year, I travelled all the way from Birmingham back to Leeds just to have some Thai food with my friends.
