Hi, my name is Vanessa and I am a Final Year Business Management student. I am from Singapore, and I studied in Tourism and Resort Management in Singapore Polytechnic before coming to the University of Leeds.

I heard about the University of Leeds when I was researching for top business schools in the UK, and was also recommended by an agent helping with my application back in Singapore. Leeds University Business School (LUBS) is one of a small number of schools worldwide to be triple accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, which signifies their reputation. What sealed the deal for me were the unique modules that were available here that are not common, or not found in other schools such as the Contemporary Management Consultancy module in Year 3 where a consulting certification can be obtained. As someone who is interested in all aspects of business, I felt that having a consultancy certification will enable me to widen my capabilities and expand my job scope.

...the lecturers are really friendly and are always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it

As a third-year student, I have two years of experience studying in the UK under my belt. Over the summer, I embarked on a solo trip and have learnt lots about myself, such as my habits and weaknesses. In my final year at the University, my main aim is to continue meeting new people and getting to know them, as well as to prioritise my studies. Apart from that, I will also be focusing on applications for job opportunities in the UK. I am really thankful that the University provides ample resources that helps students to prepare for job applications, as well as to write a resume under the Career Center. Not only that, there are also networking events held throughout the year by both the University as well as societies such as the Career Fair, allowing students to connect with future employers and colleagues.

Other resources includes each student being assigned a Personal Tutor (PT) where one-to-one sessions are held and students are able to discuss more in-depth of any concerns to their PT. I talked to my PT about my career goals, as well as academic goals and I felt that it helped me to better understand what I want to achieve during the school year. I will continue to tap into these resources and 'manifest' a job!

My favorite thing about the university is the many areas where I am able to study and just hang out with friends. Apart from the 4 libraries on campus, there are many work areas all around school, especially in the union where there are cafes and other eateries nearby to provide energy while studying. The coffee sold at the union are really good(in my opinion), and cheaper than those outside of school. My favourite spot is the study area in the Business School. You can find me there most of the time as I am rubbish at studying at home. That area is perfect to study, hence I will usually head there after class.

Leeds is a wonderful city to just walk around and take a breather. Coming from someone who does not walk much back home, I think the joy and curiousness you get living in a new city will make you want to explore the area, and just travel more in general. I have already been on a few trips and it has been so much fun! I am currently staying in a Private accommodation, but stayed in Central Village during my first-year which is a university accommodation right on campus and near the city center. I am staying with one of my friends and it an en-suite accommodation, though bills are not included in the rent. It is located near the city and not too far from school, so I get the best of both worlds! The laundry machine is located in the kitchen, so it makes washing convenient.

Leeds is a wonderful city...

I hope this gave some insights on what it is like being an International student and can't wait to chat with you! Please feel free to message me on Unibuddy or email at vanessa-link@leeds.ac.uk.
