Hello! I'm Santiago Bravo, originally from Ecuador, currently studying for my MSc in International Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Leeds. My journey into civil engineering began with a BSc in Ecuador at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, where I developed a solid foundation in engineering principles. Driven by the ambition to expand my knowledge and work within the global construction sector, I chose the University of Leeds for its international reputation, exceptional academic environment, and its emphasis on practical, real-world skills.
I had always considered the UK as an ideal destination due to its educational standards and engineering heritage.
When researching the top institutions for my field, Leeds quickly stood out. Among the top universities, Leeds appealed to me the most, not just for its academic quality but for the responsiveness and support I received throughout my application process. I was impressed by how welcoming and helpful the university was in answering my questions, which confirmed that Leeds was the right choice for me.
Since my arrival, my experience at the university has been transformative and rewarding. Leeds offers so much more than just classes—there’s an incredible array of societies, courses, and activities that keep life interesting and balanced. The university’s diversity has enabled me to connect with people from all over the world, which has broadened my perspectives immensely. I've had the opportunity to represent my course as a Course Representative, which has been a privilege and has allowed me to actively contribute to the student community.
One of my favourite aspects of the MSc course is how it merges theory with practice. Each assignment and activity is designed to apply what we've learned to real-life scenarios, bridging the gap between academia and the professional world. This hands-on approach has enriched my understanding and prepared me for the challenges of the construction industry. Additionally, the program’s modules provide a well-rounded view of international construction management, covering everything from engineering economics to project management on a global scale.
Beyond academics, Leeds University has also provided me with numerous career development opportunities. I've attended seminars with speakers from various countries, gaining insights into international perspectives on construction and management. Additionally, the university regularly holds career fairs, three of which I’ve already attended. These events have been invaluable for networking, allowing me to meet professionals from my field, connect with them on LinkedIn, and gain practical advice on building a career in construction management.
Living in Leeds has been an incredible experience. It’s a city that blends modern vibrancy with a sense of community and history.
In my free time, I’m very active and passionate about sports. I participate in Parkrun on Saturdays, a community running event that helps me stay fit and connect with like-minded individuals. I also enjoy watching football, a shared interest with many of my friends, and we often catch a match together at a local pub. Fitness and sports have always been essential parts of my life, giving me the energy and mental clarity needed for my studies and personal goals. When I’m not being active, I enjoy exploring Leeds' charming coffee shops and patisseries. These places provide a peaceful atmosphere where I can relax, reflect, or read a good book with a cup of coffee in hand.
Leeds is rich with cultural and recreational activities, and I’ve come to appreciate the unique spots around the city that have become my personal favourites. Exploring Leeds has introduced me to a new world of cultures, foods, and events, making every day an opportunity to learn something new or meet someone interesting.
As for my accommodation, I live in university housing, which has been an ideal setting to immerse myself in the student.
