Hi, I am Robert!
I am currently pursuing an MSc in Medical Imaging at the University of Leeds through the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship. Before joining Leeds, I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Ghana, where I graduated as the valedictorian of my cohort. This achievement encouraged me to aim higher and explore opportunities that would allow me to reach my full potential. I decided to pursue a master’s degree abroad, and the United Kingdom quickly became my top destination because of its world-class education system and research excellence.
Choosing where to study in the UK was not an easy decision. I received offers from six universities, each with attractive programmes and facilities. However, after careful consideration, I chose the University of Leeds, and it has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Several factors influenced my choice. Firstly, the University’s strong global and national rankings gave me confidence that I would receive a high-quality education. Secondly, I was deeply impressed by Leeds’ commitment to diversity and inclusion. Coming from Africa, I wanted to study in a place where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of background. Feeling welcome and supported makes a big difference when adapting to a new academic and social environment.
The city of Leeds itself also appealed to me. It is vibrant, friendly, and easy to navigate. Its central location and excellent transport links make travelling around the UK convenient, allowing me to explore new places and experience British culture beyond the classroom. The affordability of living in Leeds compared with other major UK cities was another bonus. My experience at Leeds so far has been incredibly fulfilling.
I have had the opportunity to meet and connect with people from all over the world.
My class includes students from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the United Kingdom, creating a rich mix of perspectives and experiences that make classroom discussions engaging and thought-provoking. The academic environment at Leeds is both stimulating and supportive. My favourite thing about the University is its modern learning spaces, especially the hybrid teaching rooms where lectures are recorded. This feature allows students to review content at their own pace and reflect on what they have learned. I have also benefited from the University Library’s workshops and one-to-one academic skills sessions, which have been extremely helpful in improving my research and writing abilities.
What I enjoy most about my course is how practical and interactive it is. Through tutorials, advanced simulation tools, and virtual learning environments, I have developed a deeper understanding of how medical imaging techniques are applied in real clinical settings. These experiences have helped me strengthen my technical and problem-solving skills while preparing me for professional work in the field of medical imaging.
Outside my studies, I enjoy travelling, exploring new places, and watching football. Visiting the Leeds Museums and Galleries is one of my favourite weekend activities, as it offers a great opportunity to learn about history, art, and how the past continues to shape the present. I also enjoy spending time with friends, attending cultural events, and trying different cuisines from around the world, which Leeds offers in abundance.
I live in Royal Park Flats, a University-managed accommodation that was recently refurbished. The rooms are modern and comfortable, the rent is affordable, and it is only a fifteen-minute walk from campus. Living close to the University makes it easy for me to access the Edge Gym, the Library, and other campus facilities. The sense of community within the accommodation has also made it easy to make friends and feel at home.
My advice to prospective students is simple: if you are looking for a university that combines academic excellence, diversity, and innovation with a welcoming and supportive environment, then the University of Leeds should be your top choice. It is a place where you can learn, grow, and truly belong.
