Hello! My name is Rafia and I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I am currently a third-year BSc Accounting and Finance student within the Leeds University Business School at the University of Leeds.
Before coming to the University of Leeds, I studied at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. When I decided to pursue Accounting and Finance, I researched about universities in the UK and was impressed by the University of Leeds' prestigious reputation. In the year that I was applying, the University was ranked in the top 75th universities in the world and 15th in the UK for Accounting and Finance. Before starting my course, I completed International Foundation Year (Business) which equipped me with the necessary knowledge and confidence to navigate the challenges, ensuring a smooth transition into university-level education. I was also fortunate enough to achieve the “Leeds International Foundation Year Scholarship 2022”.
When I decided to pursue Accounting and Finance, I researched about universities in the UK and was impressed by the University of Leeds' prestigious reputation.
My time at Leeds has been nothing short of amazing. One highlight was being selected as a Laidlaw Scholar in 2023, through which I completed my Learning in Action (LiA) project with BRAC in Bangladesh. I worked with BRAC’s Education Programme (Educating the Most Disadvantaged Children project), conducting field trips and exploring how technology and AI could support inclusive education. This experience gave me hands-on exposure to international development and allowed me to apply my skills to a meaningful, real-world project.
On campus, I serve as a Residential Life Assistant (RLA) at Henry Price accommodation, supporting students in their transition to university life. I previously lived in Charles Morris Hall for 3 years. I am also the Co-President of the Leeds University Bengali Society, which has given me the chance to lead cultural events, celebrate Bangladeshi heritage, and connect students from similar backgrounds. These roles have helped me grow in leadership, teamwork, and communication while building a sense of community for others.
One of my favourite aspects of Leeds is the discovery module system, which lets students branch out beyond their main subject. I studied Korean in my first year and then took beginners’ Arabic in my second year- both enriching experiences that connected me to different cultures. As for my course, I appreciate the flexibility of three pathways: professional, academic, and corporate life, which open up opportunities for internships and placements, including with the Big Four accounting firms. The Careers Centre has been a consistent guide in shaping my career ambitions.
Leeds as a city is vibrant and diverse. I especially value being part of the South Asian community, which makes me feel at home away from home. My favourite spot for South Asian cuisine is MyLahore, while Roundhay Park is my go-to for relaxing walks, swan-watching, and ice cream.
Outside my studies, I attend weekly kickboxing sessions at The Edge and enjoy baking, often sharing my creations with friends.
Overall, my time at Leeds has been transformative, not only in terms of academics, but also personal and leadership development. From being a Laidlaw Scholar to taking on leadership roles on campus, I’ve grown immensely and feel prepared for whatever the future holds.
