Hi everyone, my name is Omar Tadeo and I am currently studying MSc International Construction Management and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering. After completed my bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, I held various positions within the construction industry. In my most recent role, I was directly involved in implementing construction management approaches in a public company in Peru. This was part of a national directive advised by the Peruvian Government and the UK-Peru Infrastructure Task Force.

During this experience, I became aware of the significant changes taking place in the management of construction projects in my country. It became evident that to actively participate in driving this transformation, I needed to increase my knowledge and practical experiences. That is why, I decided to study in the United Kingdom and specifically in the University of Leeds.

Being part of such a prestigious academic institution will undoubtedly enhance my professional profile.

I chose to study in Leeds because the School of Civil Engineering holds a prestigious position in the academic world (ranking in the top 10 in the UK for Civil Engineering and in the top 50 worldwide for Civil and Structural Engineering, according to the Guardian University Guide 2024 and the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023, respectively). Additionally, the University of Leeds ranks in the top 75 universities according to the QS World Rankings 2024 and is part of the Russell Group. Being part of such a prestigious academic institution will undoubtedly enhance my professional profile.

Additionally, the University offers a lot of financial awards to international students. I myself have had the privilege of obtaining the International Masters Excellence Scholarship granted by the School of Civil Engineering. From the moment I became an offer holder, I have felt that the University has been accompanying me throughout the entire pre-travel and post-travel process, demonstrating that it cares about my well-being and safety.

Firstly, a few days after receiving my offer, I talked with Link to Leeds ambassadors who resolved the numerous doubts that other offer holders and I had about topics such as insurance, accommodation, banks and others. Then, after my arrival in Leeds, the University picked me up at the airport and took me to my accommodation where the staff that welcomed me was very friendly and empathetic as they explained to me everything I needed to start my life in the accommodation. Finally, during my first days in Leeds, I was invited to several integration activities to meet people from my accommodation, my school and other schools.

After several weeks at the university, I can say that there are many things that I like. However, three places stand out as my favorites. First, the Language Zone, where I can study and practice the languages I am learning. Second, the Edge, where I can engage in sports. Finally, the Leeds University Union, which offers several recreational environments such as pubs, restaurants, and a theater, among others.

What I also love about studying at Leeds University is something I missed during my undergraduate career: the opportunity to hold leadership positions, such as being part of the Residence Life Social Committee and now, as a Leeds Ambassador.

Regarding the course I selected, I am highly satisfied for three reasons. Firstly, it serves as the perfect complement to my professional experience in the field of construction projects because it fills my knowledge and experience. Secondly, the program offers events that facilitate interaction and engagement within the UK construction industry. Lastly, being surrounded by students from diverse backgrounds and experiences enriches both the debates and perspectives.

However, not everything great happens only inside the classroom; it's equally important to enjoy one's time outside of it. The university hosts numerous clubs and societies at the Leeds University Union focus on various interests such as sports, culture, dance, academics, and more. I chose to engage with three groups aligned with my passions: the Salsa Club, Football, and the French/German/Italian language groups. Through these societies, I've learned to dance salsa and bachata, played football, practiced the languages I've learned and socialized by taking walks or visiting places in one of the most visited places: the Leeds city center.

The campus is conveniently located near the city center and several student areas, facilitating quick and easy access to wherever you want to go. Additionally, Leeds is strategically situated almost in the middle of the UK, allowing for quick and easy visits to places like London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. Also, there are numerous cafes, parks, shops, and interesting places to explore. One of my favorite spots is Woodhouse Moore, as it allows me to engage in sports, read, or spend quality time with friends.

Leeds is a remarkably welcoming student city, brimming with international students, offering a diverse and inclusive community.

For all these reasons, Leeds is a remarkably welcoming student city, brimming with international students, offering a diverse and inclusive community. This is why Leeds has been consistently ranked among the top 100 cities for students according to the QS Best Student Cities 2024.

Due to this, the city provides a wide array of accommodation options for students. Personally, I opted for university accommodations. Since my arrival, the place was impeccably clean, well-maintained, equipped with security measures, and contained all the essentials necessary to begin my life in Leeds. What I particularly appreciate about my accommodation is its proximity to the university and its infrastructure because it has a common area where friends can gather and even green spaces within the building complex for short walks.
