Hi! My name is Moira Mou from China. I’m currently studying for my second Master’s degree in the Media and Communication MA programme at the University of Leeds. Previously, I have completed my Bachelor’s degree in English and first Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting in China. After finishing my first Master’s, I mainly worked in the education filed in China. But one day, I suddenly realized that I wanted to broaden my career options and explore new possibilities in my life. So, after thorough consideration, I decided to pursue my second Master’s degree in Media and Communication at my dream university.
To be honest, before officially starting my studies, I had already spent some time living in Leeds to experience my new life here, and I also visited several other universities in different cities in the UK.
All those experiences made me even more certain my choice: Leeds was the right place for me to live and study!
Most importantly, I chose the University of Leeds because it has an excellent reputation both in my previous field and in my new area of interest. When I was majoring in English, I learned from my teachers that the university’s Centre for Translation, Interpreting and Localisation Studies offers competitive postgraduate degrees and conducts world-leading research in language services. While preparing to pursue my studies in media, I learned that the School of Media and Communication is among the top ranking lists. The university’s media programme is ranked 4th in the UK for Communication and Media Studies by The Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026.
Additionally, the environment of the university is very beautiful. It’s always relaxing to see cute rabbits hopping around on my way to class. The flower beds are timely replanted based on different weather conditions – sometimes they are changed even faster than my phone wallpaper! It's unbelievable that the campus looks so nice in every season. In spring and summer, there are various flowers; in autumn, the leaves turn yellow and red; and in winter, it sometimes snows, but the grass always stays lush...
So far, my experience at the University has been amazing! I’ve been able to maintain a good balance between study, life, and part-time work. There are plenty of opportunities to explore different interests, and I’ve met many like-minded souls through the University’s diverse societies and events.
The University has also given me valuable exposure to a diverse cultural and linguistic environment, which has broadened my perspective both academically and personally.
As for Leeds itself, my favourite thing about the city is how convenient life here is. It’s easy to get around the city and to travel to many other places of the UK. In Leeds, almost all frequently-visited places, like supermarkets, shops, and even the train station, are within my walking distance. Outside Leeds, many interesting cities, such as York, Manchester, and even the Lake District, can be easily visited within one or two hours by train.
In my spare time, I love hiking. Leeds is also a great base for hiking, as many starting points of hiking circulars can be easily reached by train within just one or two hours. Before coming to UK, I never imagined I could walk more than ten kilometres in nature! The fact is that being outdoors and hiking really help me escape from daily stress and enjoy the beauty of the landscape. It’s always refreshing and fulfilling.
