Mia Labhane

Hi! I’m Mia, originally from Mumbai, India, and I’m currently studying BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Leeds.

I joined Leeds through the International Foundation Year Engineering Pathway, and after completing my Foundation Year, I’ve now progressed into the first year of my undergraduate degree. Before coming here, I completed my high school studies in Mumbai itself. I’ve always been fascinated by how cities breathe - how buildings, transport systems, infrastructure and people interact with the environment. That curiosity eventually turned into a passion for sustainability and urban development, which led me to pursue engineering.

I first discovered the University of Leeds when I was researching UK universities known for their strong focus on sustainability and global research.

Leeds immediately stood out - not only because of its academic reputation and strong civil and environmental engineering department, but also because of how vibrant and inclusive the student community is.

Coming to the UK through the Foundation Year gave me the opportunity to develop my academic skills while also learning how to adapt to a new education system and a new country.

My experience at the University of Leeds has been amazing so far. I really enjoyed how the classes encouraged problem-solving, independent thinking and practical learning, and completing the Foundation Year gave me the confidence to progress onto my degree.

Now that I’ve started my first year of Civil and Environmental Engineering, I’m excited to build on everything I learnt during my Foundation Year and explore the different areas of my degree in more depth. I’m particularly interested in environmental engineering, sustainability and climate-resilient design, and I’m looking forward to understanding how engineering can contribute to creating more sustainable cities and communities.

I enjoy exploring how innovative design and engineering solutions can address environmental challenges, from reducing the carbon footprint of cities to understanding issues such as the Urban Heat Island Effect and its mitigation strategies. These interests have also encouraged me to explore research beyond my coursework and continue developing my technical and analytical skills.

Outside of my studies, I enjoy getting involved in student events, sustainability activities, volunteering, travelling and exploring new places. During my time at Leeds, I’ve joined Leeds University Union societies including the Plant Society, Book Club, Conservation Volunteers and Meditation Society. I also love photography, exploring new places around Leeds, and spending time with friends over coffee or a walk through the city.

What I adore most about the University of Leeds is how it encourages balance - you can be deeply focused on your degree but still find time to explore new hobbies, join societies and make lasting friendships. There’s always something happening on campus, from sustainability talks to international student events.

Leeds as a city feels like a perfect mix of energy and comfort - it’s lively, diverse and welcoming, yet it never feels overwhelming. I love walking around Hyde Park, the City Centre, Kirkgate Market and the Leeds Dock area, especially on sunny days.

Living in university accommodation has also been a big part of my experience. It’s been a great way to meet people from all over the world and build a little community of our own. Last year I was also a part of my residence’s social committee, where I get to help plan events for students living there. It’s been such a fun way to get involved in university life outside of my studies.

I’m really enjoying my time here - studying what I love, making new friends and becoming more independent. Leeds has truly become a home away from home for me.
