My name is Lillian Dwyer, and I am a second-year undergraduate student studying BA English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of Leeds. I’m originally from the United States: I grew up in Southern California, moved to Florida when I was twelve, attended boarding school in Maine, and later studied for two years at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania before taking a year off to reflect on my goals and deciding to continue my studies at the University of Leeds.
When researching universities abroad, I knew I wanted to study English and Creative Writing in the United Kingdom, where English Literature has deep roots and is highly respected. The University of Leeds stood out to me for its strong academic reputation, renowned student union and vibrant student life, as well as the opportunity to study a subject that I am truly passionate about. I reached out to alumni on LinkedIn and Link to Leeds ambassadors through the university website, and I heard only wonderful things about both the university and my course. Before finalizing my decision, I had the opportunity to visit Leeds, where I attended a campus tour led by a Link to Leeds ambassador, and that visit confirmed that it was the right choice for me.
Since arriving in Leeds in September, everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. The city is student-friendly and offers plenty of things to do while still being easy to navigate. There are museums, galleries, shops, a wide variety of great restaurants, and events throughout the year. I also love how easy it is to explore the surrounding areas. There are many charming towns and cities near Leeds that make great day trips! I love to visit Manchester and York, both of which are easily accessible by train.
Even larger cities like London and Edinburgh are only a short journey away, making Leeds an ideal base for exploring more of the UK.
My favourite aspect of my course so far is the workshop element within my Creative Writing module, where I collaborate with my peers to give and receive feedback on each other’s writing. It’s been a very supportive environment that has helped me grow in confidence and improve my writing skills. I also make use of office hours to receive additional feedback and discuss my ideas in a one-on-one setting with my tutors, who have an immense amount of knowledge and are always willing to help.
Outside of my studies, I enjoy spending time with friends, exploring new places, and being outdoors. Leeds has a wonderful cafe culture, and I often spend time writing or reading in local coffee shops. Some of my favourites so far are Stage Coffee, Sonder, and the café upstairs in Waterstones. I’ve also joined the Coffee Society, which has been a great way to meet people and make friends through socials and events. I also enjoy visiting parks and green spaces around the city. One of my favourites being Roundhay Park, which is absolutely stunning and home to beautiful swans on the lake.
In my first year, I lived in a private flat off-campus, just five minutes away from both the city centre and the University, which was peaceful and comfortable, and I’ve now moved into a house in Kirkstall with some friends for my second year of study, which I’m excited to explore!
Having lived in many different places and attended several schools, I know from experience that the University of Leeds is truly a special place.
I also understand the challenges of moving abroad and adjusting to a new environment. If you are considering studying at Leeds or have any questions about student life here, I would be more than happy to help!
