Hi everyone! My name is Latifa, and I’m proud to be a Link to Leeds ambassador and a Genetics student at the University of Leeds.
My journey here began in Uzbekistan, where I first developed a love for languages, science, and cultural exchange. What once felt like an impossible dream, to study abroad, became a reality thanks to persistence, encouragement from my peers, and the El-Yurt Umidi scholarship programme. Winning that award, after applying at the very last minute, showed me that sometimes the biggest risks lead to the most rewarding opportunities.
Since arriving in Leeds, my experience has been far more than just academics. Before I began my degree, I studied the University of Leeds International Foundation Year. My degree in Genetics challenges me to think critically, explore cutting-edge research, and apply science to real-world problems. Beyond my studies, I’ve thrown myself into roles that connect me with people and communities: as a Residence Life Assistant supporting students in accommodation, as a student leader in intercultural projects, and as an ambassador sharing my story with prospective students. I’ve also had the chance to take on research and engagement internships, where I learned how to turn ideas into impact and how collaboration can transform student experiences.
What I love most about the University is the diversity of people and opportunities, it feels like every day offers a new chance to learn, grow, and connect.
What I love most about the University is the diversity of people and opportunities, it feels like every day offers a new chance to learn, grow, and connect. Leeds as a city reflects that same energy. From the green spaces like Hyde Park to the calm of Leeds Dock, where I lived during my foundation year, to the buzz of the markets and cafés, it’s a place that quickly feels like home.
Looking back, the girl who once thought studying abroad was impossible would hardly believe how far she’s come. My time at Leeds has taught me that with courage, support, and determination, “impossible” really can become possible. I hope my journey shows you what’s waiting here at Leeds, not just a degree, but a community, a city, and opportunities that can shape your future in ways you never imagined.
