Hello! I’m Jze Xuan, from Malaysia.
I’m currently in my final year, majoring in Accounting and Finance. Before joining University of Leeds, I completed my first year of degree in HELP University Malaysia.
About two years ago, I stumbled upon a YouTube vlog titled “A Day in My Life as a University of Leeds Student”, which showcased the campus and the city. That video sparked my curiosity, and I began researching more about both the university and Leeds itself. From then on, the University of Leeds became my first choice for higher education because of its outstanding global reputation and commitment to excellence. The university offers world-class facilities that encourage both academic and personal growth, ranging from advanced research labs to expansive libraries and innovative study spaces. My favourite is the Brotherton Library. I’ve always dreamt of studying in a historic library, and as a Harry Potter fan, I find it one of the most magical spots on campus!
I later found out about the discovery modules that are offered in Leeds where you had the opportunity to study modules from different schools. Even as a Business School student, I had the chance to take modules from the School of History, Psychology, or even Film Studies. On top of that, the University of Leeds provides excellent career support and opportunities to gain real-world experience. With strong partnerships with leading global employers, students can access placement years, internships, and industry projects. Personally, I find the CV Checker tool from the  Careers Service especially helpful, it gives instant feedback on CVs and cover letters, highlighting areas to improve with clear examples and explanations.
University of Leeds provides an exciting and balanced student life as it has one of the largest student unions in the UK, with over 300 clubs and societies ranging from sports teams to academic and cultural groups.
Being a member of the Malaysian and Singaporean society, I had the opportunity to meet many friends from my home country and join the events organised by the society such as Freshers’ Night, Trips to Education Fair, Halloween parties, Movie Nights, Bonfire Night etc. Moreover, I had the opportunity to participate in the Malaysian Games (MGames) in Manchester as part of the netball team where we competed against other Malaysian teams from different universities. If you are a sports person, getting a The Edge student membership will definitely enhance your university life experience.
One of the things I enjoy most about living in Leeds is how convenient it is to travel to nearby cities and towns by train. The excellent transport links make it easy to explore places nearby like York, Knaresborough, Sheffield, and Harrogate. Whether it’s a day trip to admire York’s historic charm, a relaxing walk along the river in Knaresborough, or discovering the unique and peaceful character of Harrogate. Leeds provides the perfect base for exploring the wider region. Beyond that, Leeds is also very well connected to major UK cities, with London just a 2 hour 15 minutes train ride away and Manchester only about 1 hour 30 minutes. This makes it easy to enjoy both local getaways and exciting trips to larger cities
Having gone through the challenges of adjusting to university life and overcoming homesickness myself, I truly understand how important it is for international students to feel supported, informed, and connected from the start of their journey abroad. But don’t worry, we’re here to support you every step of the way!
