Hello! I am Jia Xin.

I’m from Malaysia and currently in my final year studying BSc Computer Science at the University of Leeds. I joined Leeds through a transfer program, spending one year at Taylor’s University in Malaysia before completing the final two years here.

While my university in Malaysia offers a variety of transfer programs, the University of Leeds immediately stood out to me. I had always wanted to study on a large campus with a vibrant student life, and Leeds ticks all the boxes. From well-designed seminar rooms to spacious lecture theatres, and from the historic Brotherton Library to the modern Laidlaw Library, the campus beautifully blends old and new architecture in a way that feels both unique and harmonious.

One of my favourite spots on campus is the Parkinson Steps. Imagine a sunny afternoon, a light breeze on your face, a warm toasted sandwich in hand, and a friend beside you. You’re chatting away on the stairs, watching people walk past. It’s one of those simple moments that help me unwind, take my mind off studies, and come back feeling refreshed.

After spending a year at the University of Leeds, I can sum up my experience in three words: I love it!

Beyond the fantastic facilities and the beautiful campus (and yes, you’ll even spot bunnies around here) what really makes Leeds special is how warm, supportive, and approachable everyone here is, from lecturers to staff and fellow students.

One aspect that truly stands out at the University of Leeds is the career support available to students. Last summer, like many others, I was nervous about finding a summer internship, especially as an international student. It’s no secret that securing a job in the UK can be challenging, and I experienced that first-hand with a few rejections. Just when I was about to give up, I discovered the university’s employability services, and it completely turned things around.

They regularly email students about opportunities exclusive to Leeds, including summer internships offered by professors where you can work on real projects alongside PhD students. Beyond listing opportunities, the service also provides CV and cover letter checks, and if you want more personalized guidance, you can book one-to-one online appointments or even mock interviews with experienced professionals.

I took full advantage of these services, refined my CV, and ultimately secured a summer internship at the University of Leeds. My project focused on integrating piano with a virtual environment, building a mixed reality application to help piano performers manage performance anxiety. It was an incredible experience that allowed me to explore a new career path and gave me a unique opportunity to learn skills beyond the classroom.

Outside of my studies, I love spending my free time playing sports. I often play badminton with friends at The Edge, the student sports centre, and also play netball competitively through the Malaysian and Singaporean Society (MASSOC). MASSOC not only hosts its own Malaysian Games but also encourages Leeds students to join tournaments organized by other Malaysian societies across the UK. I’ve even had the chance to travel to Manchester, Nottingham, and Sheffield while doing what I love! Beyond sports, MASSOC celebrates cultural festivals and events, which makes it a great way to connect with people and feel at home. With so many clubs and societies at the University of Leeds, I’m confident you’ll find one that suits your interests and passions perfectly!

I also love exploring the city in my free time. Leeds city centre is within walking distance from campus, and it truly has everything you need. This year, I’m living at Prestige Student Living The Storehouse, a modern, newly built accommodation in the heart of the city. What makes it really stand out are the thoughtful perks: free breakfast every Wednesday, free laundry, weekly personal training sessions, and festive celebrations ranging from big events like Christmas, Halloween pumpkin carving, and Bonfire Night, to smaller touches like Healthy Fruit Fridays. There’s always something to look forward to, which makes student life both fun and convenient.

As an international student, I have seen first-hand how much effort goes into making us feel at home. Leeds truly becomes a home away from home.

I know moving to a new country and starting a new chapter can feel scary and overwhelming (I’ve been through it myself!), but with change comes new experiences, surprises, and opportunities. I can’t wait for you to create your own fun memories, meet amazing people, and enjoy all the incredible experiences that Leeds has to offer.

Got any questions about life at Leeds? Don’t be shy, ask away! I’d love to share my tips, stories, and all the little things that make this place so special. Feel free to contact me via Unibuddy or email me at [email protected].
