Hi there! I'm Hiel, presently studying an International Foundation Year for Biochemistry, from the Philippines!
Before coming to Leeds, I took a gap year after finishing my High School Diploma in Baguio, to gain a little bit of work experience and focus on my applications for undergraduate study overseas. After a non-straightforward journey composed of a series of application twists and turns, along with a little help from an education agent in my area, I secured my place to study here at the University of Leeds.
I've found the International Foundation Year pretty useful so far, as it serves to be a good opportunity to further develop my academic skills which I believe will make harder modules in my undergraduate degree a lot more manageable.
On my course, something that's really interesting for me are the hands-on laboratory sessions in my Biology and Chemistry classes because as early as now, we are able to see how work in this field can translate into real-world, collaborative impact. The University also has an excellent Careers Service, as well as MyCareers and Joblink, which I have found useful for student professional development and looking for part-time work while you study. You'll also not be short of study spots around campus, because apart from the many places to study at the student union, the University's four libraries are free to access with your student card.
While I've primarily chosen Leeds for its position as a Russell Group university and its 86th position in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, it's the diverse and inclusive community of people from all over the world that keeps me grounded here. In just a few weeks in, Leeds has started to feel like my home away from home. From the vibrance of student life through the Leeds University Union's (LUU) many social events like Global Café and Fruity Fridays, to the buzzing atmosphere of the city centre's iconic landmarks such as the Corn Exchange and Kirkgate Markets, I've always felt welcomed to Leeds' many charms. Not to mention, the LUU has over 350+ clubs and societies which are free for students to Give It A Go before considering a membership. Other facilities, programmes, and events like The Edge gym, Get Out Get Active, the Trips Programme, and Residence Life Events indeed make it so that students like us love our time at Leeds.
Outside of studies, you'll find me grabbing a pint or getting a cup of coffee while catching up with friends. On campus, there are a number of cafes and bars that you could go to. My favourite ones at the moment are Terrace located inside the LUU and the Caffe Nero by the pond at the Roger Stevens Building, where the building was recently given the People's Choice Award as part of the Leeds Architecture Awards 2025. Of course, the city is also not without its own fair share of lively activities, events, and places. Here, you'll find me with a book in hand discovering the many cafes in the city, taking pictures of the Leeds Town Hall at sunset, or taking a stroll through the city's annual events such as the Leeds Light Night.
At the moment, I live in private student accommodation, as recommended by the University's accommodation team. Here, I've chosen an ensuite room with a shared kitchen which balances out my need for alone time and socialising. Living a little bit further away from campus has also made me explore a bit on the daily walk from home to the university, where I figured out a route that allows me to get my cheeky matcha fix from a local stall located on the way.
