Hi there! I’m Gauravi Patil, a postgraduate student pursuing an MSc in Engineering Geology. I’m originally from India and completed my BSc in Geology in Mumbai before joining the University of Leeds. I chose Leeds because of its outstanding academic reputation and global standing. Ranked 21st worldwide for Earth Sciences and 16th for Geology, the university's achievements really set it apart. It’s also part of the prestigious Russell Group, which speaks to the high quality of teaching and research here. Before applying, I spoke to alumni from my course who strongly recommended Leeds, highlighting the approachable and supportive teaching staff. Now that I’m here, I can wholeheartedly say that Leeds truly lives up to its reputation!

One of the best things about studying at Leeds is how student-friendly the city is. Leeds is a vibrant and welcoming city with so much to offer. It’s a place where you’ll find something for everyone. Whether you’re into sports, arts, or academics, there are over 300 clubs and societies hosted by the Leeds University Union (LUU), so you’re bound to find a place to connect with like-minded people. I love spending my spare time hanging out at the Union with friends. The city itself is buzzing with life, offering a mix of modern and historic spaces, great cafes, pubs, restaurants, and outdoor markets. It’s the perfect place to study while also making the most of student life.

The University of Leeds has a strong focus on employability, which I really appreciate. The MSc Engineering Geology program here is accredited by The Engineering Council, the Geological Society of London, the Joint Board of Moderators, and EUR-ACE. I’m thrilled with the course and feel it fully meets my expectations. My course also includes frequent fieldwork around the city, and we’re even going on a trip to Greece soon! I’m really grateful for the diverse learning experiences the university offers. For career support, the Careers Service is brilliant—they help you plan your next steps even if you’re still figuring things out, and I often drop in for advice on shaping my career path in the industry.

Campus facilities at Leeds make studying here a comfortable experience. I often spend late nights at the university libraries, but I never worry about getting home safely, thanks to the university’s Night Bus service. This bus runs every night from the student union and drops you right at your doorstep, so if you’re attending a late-night event or working on a project, you can feel at ease.
For my accommodation, I chose to stay at Sentinel Towers, one of the quieter university halls just a 15-minute walk from both campus and the city centre. With a Co-op supermarket literally at the doorstep and easy access to shops, cafés, and restaurants, it’s incredibly convenient. Sentinel Towers suits me well, as I enjoy a quieter space to study, but there’s also a cozy common area where I can relax with friends, giving it a good blend of social life and peaceful study time. The facilities here are great too, with onsite laundry and bicycle storage. And as a bonus, we get an off-peak sports and gym membership at The Edge!
Leeds is a city that truly embraces students, and whether you're looking to focus on your studies, make friends, or explore new hobbies, you’ll find something to suit you here. The University and the city itself are both incredibly supportive, and I’m absolutely loving my time here!
If you’re thinking of coming to Leeds, I’d love to be part of your journey and help answer any questions you might have.
