Before coming to the University of Leeds, I studied at a private high school in Richmond Hill, Canada. It was then I knew I wanted to go to the UK for Law. I worked with an agency called StudyIn, who were helpful in guiding me through the process of finding the right university in the UK and helping me apply. That’s actually how I first came across the University of Leeds, and once I started looking into it and had the opportunity to visit the University, I knew right away that this was the place I wanted to be, something about it just felt right.

When I was deciding where to go, I wanted a mix of strong academics, a good reputation, and a city that felt alive. Leeds checks all those boxes. The university’s ranking and reputation were very good, but what really caught my attention was the sense of community and the student life. I knew moving across the world at 18 wouldn’t be easy, so it was really important for me to go somewhere that felt welcoming and comfortable, somewhere I could picture myself living for three years. Leeds offered that perfect balance. The campus is beautiful, the student experience sounded amazing, and the more I learned, the more I could see myself there.

My experience at Leeds so far has been so incredible. The jump from high school to university, especially in a new country, was definitely scary at first. I didn’t know what to expect, and everything felt so new, from the teaching style to the culture and even just learning to live on my own. But honestly, it has been the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had.

I’ve grown so much as a person, made lifelong friends, and discovered how capable I really am.

One of my favourite things about Leeds isn’t just what happens in the classroom, it’s everything that happens outside of it. The friendships, the social life, the societies, and the opportunities to get involved in so many different things make the experience so special. Leeds is a university that really encourages you to find balance. You can work hard, but you can also have fun and explore new interests at the same time. Whether it’s joining a society, attending events, or playing sports, having a night out, there’s always something to do and someone to meet.

I’ve taken full advantage of the opportunities that Leeds offers to students. I’ve been able to explore different sides of law through the Negotiating, Mooting, and Debating Societies, which has been such a great way to gain experience and see what areas I enjoy most. These experiences helped me build confidence speaking in front of others and made learning much more interactive and exciting. It’s amazing how many opportunities there are to grow outside of lectures, all you have to do is get involved.

One thing that makes my course special is how supportive everyone is. Moving to a new country and starting university can feel overwhelming, but I’ve never felt like I was doing it alone. The professors and staff are always approachable and willing to help, and the smaller seminar groups make it easier to ask questions and learn from one another. Everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed, which creates such a positive environment.

Even after lectures, professors are happy to talk, which makes you feel valued and part of the community.

Outside of my studies, I like to stay active, it’s something that really helps me stay balanced. I go to the gym regularly, and I also play on three football (soccer) teams: the Law team, a Sunday league with my friends from first year, and a 5-a-side league that I joined recently. Sports have always been a big part of my life, and they’ve helped me make so many new friends. Playing in different teams is not just fun but also a great way to de-stress, stay healthy, and connect to others.

Leeds as a city is an amazing place to live. It’s clean, full of energy, and packed with students, which gives it such a fun and youth vibe. There’s always something happening, from markets and music events to food spots and incredible nightlife. My favourite place in the city has to be Headrow House. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink with friends, especially on a nice evening when you can sit on the rooftop and enjoy the view of the city.

When I first moved here, I lived in Central Village, one of the university halls. Living there during my first year was great because it made it so easy to meet people and adjust to university life. It felt like everyone was in the same boat, figuring things out together, and that made it much less intimidating. This year, I’m living in a house in Hyde Park with my friends, and it’s been such a fun experience. Living in a student area means you’re always surrounded by fun, your neighbours are all students too, so there’s always something going on. Plus, being a short walk from campus makes getting around so easy.

Looking back, choosing to study at the University of Leeds was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I came here not knowing exactly what to expect, but it’s given me so much more than I could have imagined, lifelong friendships, incredible experiences, and a real sense of independence. Leeds has become my home away from home, and I’m so grateful for all the memories and opportunities it’s given me. Feel free to reach out to me on Unibuddy or email at [email protected].
