Hello! I am Edith San from Singapore.
I am currently a third year student studying BChD Dental Surgery at the University of Leeds. Before studying at the University of Leeds, I studied in a boarding school in the United Kingdom - Concord College, for 2 years and took my A levels there. That was the first time I experienced studying so far away from home!
I chose to come to the University of Leeds as it is a member of the Russell Group, which consists of 24 leading UK research universities. Additionally, there is a diverse range of cultures in this vibrant city, allowing international students from all around the world to settle in easier. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years in Leeds and the opportunity of meeting people of different backgrounds has really enhanced my learning experience and broadened my horizons.
One of my favourite things about Leeds is how convenient it is and everything is in walking distance! I have yet to take the public transport here in my 3 years. The University has also provided me with various ways to get involved. In my second year, I was presented the chance to be part of the Singaporean society and served the role as the secretary, taking care of the administrative side of events for the society.
Outside of school, I like to explore food places and travel to different parts of Europe! Leeds has a vibrant food scene with many new food stores opening each year such as the recent trending Blank Street for those who love matcha. My current favourite food place is called Home which serves Chinese food and is located opposite one of the main buildings in school. I also enjoy going to the gym and my occasional Pilates classes located in the city centre.
The access to familiar food helps me to feel less homesick.
As Leeds is a student city, there are many student accommodations. A new one is constantly being built! I currently live in a private accommodation together with a friend I met through the Singaporean Society. I really like it as it is well located in the city centre and near the grocery store. The University also provides many school accommodations for students which allows you to meet new students easier!
Coming to a new city may seem daunting at first but you are not alone and you will be settled down in no time. I encourage you to join societies as it'll allow you to meet more people with similar interests. Do feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
