Hi! I’m Chidi, a first-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Leeds. Originally from Nigeria, I grew up in East London, South Africa, where I completed my National Senior Certificate. Before starting my degree, I did the International Foundation Year at the University of Leeds, which was my first time in the UK.
One of the best things about my course at the School of Mechanical Engineering is the engaging mix of theory and hands-on learning.
I first heard about Leeds through an article about top Russell Group universities, and it quickly became my top choice for its strong academic reputation, beautiful campus, and the impressive support available. I was especially drawn to the idea of studying at a world-class institution with a vibrant international community in a city that has so much to offer students.
One of the best things about my course at the School of Mechanical Engineering is the engaging mix of theory and hands-on learning. The lecturers are approachable, and the university is very supportive. With personal tutors and resources like workshops and study groups, makes it easier to stay on track academically. Leeds also offers fantastic career support from the University’s Career Centre, from internship opportunities to help with job applications and career fairs, which has been reassuring as I look toward my future in engineering as an international student.
Receiving the International Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship from the School of Mechanical Engineering has been a huge encouragement, and it motivates me to aim high in my studies.
Since arriving, I’ve really enjoyed my time here. Leeds has a lively and welcoming campus, and with over 300 clubs and societies, there’s always something to do. I’m personally a part of the Black Women Power Society and the Social Netball team, which have both been great ways to meet new people and stay active. I’ve also made some of my closest friends through events during my International Foundation Year or hosted by societies like the Nigerian Student Society. The Leeds University Union, one of the best in the country, is a hub for student life with plenty of places to eat and hang out. From cafes serving everything from fresh coffee to bubble tea, to a variety of restaurants offering different cuisines at affordable prices, there’s always something to satisfy your cravings.
One of my favourite things about Leeds is the wide variety of cuisines on offer.
Outside of academics, I love going to the gym, playing tennis, baking, and I’m a huge Chelsea FC and Novak Djokovic supporter! Leeds as a city has been incredible as well. There’s so much to explore, from the beautiful green spaces like Roundhay Park to the city centre’s vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions. One of my favourite things about Leeds is the wide variety of cuisines on offer. Whether you're craving Italian, spicy Indian food, or delicious street food, the city has something for every taste. The food scene here is diverse and full of options to satisfy any appetite.
My first accommodation, Henry Price, was conveniently located on campus, making it easy to immerse myself in university life. This year, I’m living in Carlton Hill, another university residence that offers a great sense of community. It’s ideally situated, close to both the campus and the city centre. Each accommodation has a ResLife committee that organises fun events, fostering a lively atmosphere. I’ve particularly enjoyed activities like painting, pony and dog therapy, trips, and the free food of course. These events have been a great way to connect with other students and make the most of my time in accommodation.
I can definitely relate to the nerves that come with moving so far from home to study. Coming to Leeds was my first time in the UK, and it was overwhelming at first. But with the university's strong support and the welcoming atmosphere, I quickly settled in. The people, the resources, and the opportunities here have made it all worth it.
