Hi! I'm Carolina Contreras, originally from Mexico, and I’m currently studying the MA in Global Fashion Management at the University of Leeds.
Before coming to the UK, I completed a BA in Marketing at Tecnológico de Monterrey. During my undergraduate years, my interest in business naturally started merging with a growing love for fashion, and that combination led me to look for a master’s programme that could connect both worlds.
I first found out about the University of Leeds at a Master’s fair. At the time, I didn’t know much about the institution, but I was immediately impressed by its reputation—being part of the Russell Group and ranking among the top 100 universities in the world definitely caught my attention. The more I researched, the more I felt that Leeds aligned with what I was looking for.
I wanted a university that would challenge me academically while giving me the support I needed to grow professionally. Services like the Careers Service, which offers personalised advice, workshops, mentoring, and career fairs, made a big difference in my decision. I was also drawn to HELIX, the university’s innovation hub, because of the creative opportunities it offers: free workshops, access to equipment for photography and podcasting, sewing machines, and even XR tools. It made me feel that I would be encouraged to experiment and build new skills.
My experience so far has confirmed that I chose the right place. Leeds has provided far more opportunities than I imagined. One of the highlights has been joining Lippy Magazine, a Leeds University Union (LUU) society that publishes two printed editions each year. Having my article selected for the Fall edition was incredibly rewarding. I’m also taking part in the Global Industry Programme, which has allowed me to work with a real company and apply what I’ve learned in class while building valuable industry connections.
What I appreciate most about the University is how inclusive and varied its environment is. Whatever new activity or interest comes to mind, there’s always a place to explore it. My course reflects that same spirit. It combines a solid understanding of the global fashion industry with practical activities that help us analyse real scenarios and develop strategic thinking.
Outside of my studies, I enjoy walking around the city—especially Hyde Park, which has become my go-to spot to relax and disconnect from academic life. I also like joining wellbeing workshops organised by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Cultures, where you can try simple, creative activities like making tote bags or bracelets. They’re a fun way to take a break and meet new people.
As a city, Leeds offers a great balance. There’s always something happening—bars, restaurants, museums, events—but it still feels calm, manageable, and easy to get around. That mix makes it a very comfortable yet exciting place to live.
Right now, I’m living in private student accommodation in the city centre. I enjoy being close to everything and living among other students who are going through similar experiences. It creates a sense of community while still giving me the independence I want.
Overall, Leeds has been a welcoming and inspiring place to continue my studies. I’ve grown academically, discovered new interests, and found opportunities I didn’t expect, all of which have made this experience truly worthwhile.
