Hi, my name is Carlos and I’m originally from Mexico. I graduated as a Mechatronics Engineer from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, one of the leading universities in Latin America. Throughout my academic journey, I’ve always been driven by curiosity, a desire to innovate, and a passion for learning beyond borders.

Studying in the United Kingdom has been a long-standing dream of mine. The UK’s unique blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and world-class education has always fascinated me. I’ve admired how British universities combine academic rigor with creative freedom, encouraging students to think critically and explore ideas from multiple perspectives.

I knew that pursuing a postgraduate degree here would not only challenge me intellectually but also help me grow personally in ways I couldn’t imagine.

My journey with the University of Leeds began at an education fair in Mexico City. I had been searching for a program that would push me beyond my comfort zone and help me develop skills that are relevant in today’s fast-changing world. When I discovered the MSc in Business Analytics and Decision Sciences at Leeds, everything clicked. The program offered exactly what I was looking for: a strong foundation in data-driven decision-making, exposure to cutting-edge tools, and a curriculum designed to bridge theory with real-world application.

From the very beginning, Leeds stood out—not just for its academic reputation as part of the prestigious Russell Group, but for the warmth and kindness shown throughout the application process. The admissions team was incredibly supportive, answering my questions with patience and guiding me through each step. I was genuinely surprised by how smooth and welcoming the experience was. It made me feel valued, not just as an applicant, but as a future member of the university community.

The University of Leeds places its students at the heart of everything it does. It invests heavily in creating opportunities that go far beyond the classroom—helping us build professional networks, gain real-world experience, and grow as individuals. From career fairs and industry panels to academic competitions and innovation challenges, every initiative is designed to bring out the best in us. The university fosters an environment where learning is dynamic, connections are meaningful, and every student is empowered to reach their full potential.

Since arriving in Leeds, I’ve felt embraced by both the university and the city. The transition to living in a new country can be daunting, but Leeds has made it feel natural. The university offers a wide range of support services for international students, and the staff go out of their way to make sure you feel at home. From orientation events to academic advising, everything is designed to help you succeed and feel connected.

Academically, the experience has been transformative. The professors are passionate and approachable, and the learning environment encourages collaboration and critical thinking. But Leeds offers much more than just lectures and coursework. The campus is alive with student societies, clubs, and events that cater to every interest imaginable. Whether you're into sports, arts, politics, or niche hobbies, there’s a place for you here.

Personally, I’ve taken up fencing—a hobby I never had the chance to pursue back in Mexico. I’ve also joined the Leeds Policy Institute and the university’s United Nations society, which have allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions and connect with students from diverse backgrounds. When I’m not studying or participating in campus activities, I enjoy reading, painting with watercolors, and exploring the city with my sketchbook in hand.

Leeds itself has been a wonderful surprise. The people are friendly and welcoming, and the city has a youthful energy thanks to its large student population. I’ve met individuals from all over the world, each with their own stories and perspectives, and those connections have deeply shaped how I see the world. At the end of the day, aren’t those connections the most meaningful?
