Hi! My name is Areeza, and I’m from Bangladesh! I'm currently pursuing a Masters degree in Infection, Immunity and Human Disease within the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds.
I was first acquainted with the University at the beginning of my undergraduate degree at BRAC University, Bangladesh, way before I had even started preparing for my Masters degree. With close relatives already living in Leeds, I already knew about the city’s vibrant culture, and I couldn’t wait to experience it!
The University of Leeds was one of my top choices during the admission process on account of it being a global top 100 university, and a member of the Russell Group. I was also drawn in by the focus on research-based learning and renowned employability services. As for my chosen course, although the modules were similar to those of my undergraduate major in Microbiology, the module content was far more advanced and challenging. Ultimately what confirmed my choice is my communication with the administrative and teaching personnel. Leeds was unique in the sense that the administrative personnel were very hands on with handling student queries. I never felt any hesitation to ask questions, and offer holder webinars kept me informed on all aspects of being an international student at the University. Most importantly, I was able to book a one-on-one meeting with my Program Director to discuss my questions about the course. I had never expected to have an opportunity like this, and it firmly cemented my decision to come to the University of Leeds.
The best thing about my course is how it is preparing me for a career in academic research.
The best thing about my course is how it is preparing me for a career in academic research. Via the Research Planning and Scientific Communication module and other coursework assessments, I am gaining the experience of writing literature reviews, paper critiques and grant proposals, all of which are essential skills in the research field. This has also allowed me to enhance my skills of reading research papers efficiently, identifying relevant sources and most importantly, thinking critically. I have also been able to familiarise myself with bioinformatics tools through the Practical Bioinformatics module. I am particularly intrigued by the Protein Engineering Laboratory Project set to begin next semester, and the opportunity to specialise in infection, immunity or human disease through an independent research project.
My favourite thing about the city of Leeds is…the food! It’s impossible to run out of things to eat here. From within the campus to the city centre, I often feel full just from browsing menus. Many restaurants have student-friendly prices and student discounts on top at the beginning of the academic year, and most importantly, there are several halal, vegetarian and even vegan options! My favourite spot is Trinity Kitchen at the Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre. Just a short walk from the Worsley Building, it offers student friendly options from a variety of cuisines, like Indian, Mexican, Vietnamese and Greek! Also, since it is based in a shopping centre, I'm able to enjoy my second favourite activity: shopping! With Boots on the ground floor, a two-level Primark and Lloyds Bank just across the street, it’s difficult to find a more convenient setting.
Looking back now, I can confidently say that the best thing the University of Leeds has taught me is to let go of my own limiting tendencies and speed towards the opportunities that seem the most daunting.
At the University of Leeds, my experience has been nothing short of life-changing. Although this is my first time living in a foreign country with a vastly different culture, my fears have been diminished thanks to the welcoming and supportive environment on campus. At Leeds, I’ve learned to take both my educational and personal development into my own hands. Prior to studying here, I had no concept of independent learning, and had never been to a Career Fair. I believe that my learning and networking capabilities have been significantly strengthened in the short time I've been here. Looking back now, I can confidently say that the best thing the University of Leeds has taught me is to let go of my own limiting tendencies and speed towards the opportunities that seem the most daunting.
In addition, what I love about the University is the constant effort to bring students together and create an international community. Everyone here just loves to party! Through consistent events and activities arranged by the Leeds University Union and Faculty-wide events, there’s always something to participate in. As an awkward introvert, I’ve even surprised myself with how much I’ve engaged on campus, and how freely I’m able to socialise now, all thanks to the University of Leeds.
I’d love to help make your experience at the University of Leeds just as amazing as mine has been. If you have any questions or just want to chat, feel free to message me on UniBuddy or email me at [email protected].
