Hi I'm Areej, from Karachi, Pakistan. I came from a pre-engineering background in my O Levels and I realised early on that mathematics was the subject I enjoyed most. That interest led me to pursue a BSc in Economics and Mathematics at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi. The combination of economics and mathematics gave me both a strong quantitative foundation and the ability to make real-world, data-driven decisions.
When it came to choosing a university for my postgraduate studies, it was an easy decision to join the University of Leeds.
When it came to choosing a university for my postgraduate studies, it was an easy decision to join the University of Leeds. The Leeds University Business School, triple-accredited and part of the prestigious Russell Group, stood out for its strong research culture and practical learning approach. I’m honoured to have received the International Excellence Award Scholarship, which further motivated me to be part of such a globally recognised institution.
My decision to study Business Analytics and Decision Sciences (BADS) stems from my interest in two very different but equally fulfilling worlds. On one hand, I’ve always loved designing clothes and running my own clothing brand, handling everything from creative design to operations. On the other hand, I’ve always found joy in mathematics — solving problems, analysing data, and approaching challenges systematically. BADS brings together both these sides of my personality: it requires logical thinking while encouraging creativity and innovation in problem-solving.
Before coming to Leeds, I gained over a year of experience in brand marketing and sales at multinational companies. That experience was deeply self-taught, as I had never formally studied marketing. It made me realise how valuable it would be to pursue an analytical degree that could strengthen my decision-making skills and provide a solid business understanding. Now, as a postgraduate student, I aim to become a data and business analyst who combines analytical thinking with creativity, both in corporate settings and through my entrepreneurial ventures.
Outside my studies, yoga is my way of staying grounded. I started practicing during COVID pandemic and have continued ever since. It keeps me balanced, mindful, and focused amid academic and professional commitments.
I'm happy I choose the city of Leeds because it offers the perfect balance between a vibrant student city and a calm, welcoming environment. The city’s diverse student community, affordable living, and strong sense of safety make it an ideal place for both academic growth and personal well-being. I also appreciate how Leeds is full of career opportunities, with a thriving job market that supports students and graduates alike.
I currently live in Carlton Hill Student Accommodation, which has made my transition to life in the UK much smoother. Living close to campus keeps me connected to university life and makes it easy to access all the resources and support available. The residence is home to many postgraduate students, creating a sense of community, and the Residence Life team ensures there are always engaging events and activities to help everyone feel included.
Being at the University of Leeds has already been such a rewarding experience. It has given me opportunities to grow academically, professionally, and personally, and now as a Link to Leeds Ambassador, I’m excited to share my journey with prospective students. Whether you have questions about the Business School, life in Leeds, or managing studies alongside personal passions, I’d love to chat and help you make the most informed decision about your next step.
