Hello, I'm Amalie!
I'm currently studying Theatre and Performance with Enterprise at the University of Leeds. Before coming here, I completed my A Levels at Dubai British School, Jumeirah Park. I first heard about Leeds through UCAS, and it immediately stood out to me due to its strong reputation for creative subjects, as well as the opportunity to combine performance with the strategic and business-focused aspects of Enterprise. I loved the idea of exploring theatre both artistically and practically, while also developing skills in management and leadership that would prepare me for a career in the creative industries.
My experience here so far has been incredible. The teaching is inspiring, and the lecturers are genuinely passionate about their work. They value students' individuality and are open to new ideas, which makes discussions and studio work feel dynamic and exciting. I've explored topics ranging from devising and contemporary performance to applied theatre and directing. What I've learned so far here at Leeds has really deepened my understanding of how theatre can engage audiences and provoke meaningful conversations.
Another aspect I've really enjoyed is the course's duality. I've taken Modules that have allowed me to expand my interests in business and theatre, including New Enterprise Planning and Theatre Directing. These experiences have provided me with practical insights into how a business and a performance operate and succeed behind the scenes. They've also helped me develop a stronger sense of the kind of work I want to create in the future, particularly projects that blend artistic nuances with business elements.
Outside of my degree, I'm part of the Leeds University Union Theatre Group, one of the largest and most active theatre societies on campus. We regularly collaborate on student-led productions, from classic plays to original works, and also organise events such as workshops and socials. Being part of it has been such a rewarding experience. I've had opportunities to perform and help organise events, all of which have strengthened my creative and practical skills. The society has a great mix of fun, learning, and teamwork. It's one of the best parts of student life for me!
The University makes the transition really smooth, especially for international students.
Moving from Dubai to Leeds was definitely a significant change, but it has been a gratifying experience. There's always someone to help, whether that's the International Student Office, the wellbeing services, or the friendly staff in your school. I was nervous about adjusting to a new country, but I quickly felt at home here. Leeds itself is a fantastic city to live in. It's big enough always to have something going on, but small enough to feel comfortable and personal. Some of my favourite places are the Hyde Park Picture House and the Corn Exchange!
I currently live in White Rose View, which has been a great experience. The building is modern, comfortable, and conveniently located just a short walk from campus, making it ideal for classes and rehearsals. It boasts a friendly community atmosphere, featuring numerous convenient amenities, including a gym, study rooms, a karaoke room, and a cinema room!
One of the best things about studying at the University of Leeds is how many opportunities there are to get involved and develop beyond your course. Whether it's joining a society, volunteering, or taking part in student-led projects, Leeds gives you the freedom to try new things and discover what truly inspires you.
My advice to anyone considering coming to Leeds is to make the most of every opportunity! Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Coming to study here has been one of the best decisions I've made. The University of Leeds has not only provided me with the space to explore who I am as both a creative individual and a person, but it has also inspired me to push my boundaries and discover my true potential.
