Hello! My name is Adrian and I'm from Hong Kong.

I am currently a first-year Civil and Structural Engineering student at the University of Leeds, having completed the International Foundation Year here last year. Moving to the UK for university was a significant step for me, and I have enjoyed embracing a new culture while pursuing my academic and personal goals.

I have always been fascinated by how engineering shapes the world around us. From towering skyscrapers and long-span bridges to the buildings and infrastructure we rely on every day, I am inspired by the way structures combine technical precision, creativity, and purpose to serve communities. My appreciation for the built environment grew even stronger when I volunteered on remote islands in Fiji and in rural villages in China. Seeing firsthand how access to safe and reliable infrastructure can influence people’s quality of life made me realise the important role engineers play in society. These experiences motivated me to pursue Civil and Structural Engineering and sparked my ambition to contribute to creating resilient, sustainable, and accessible infrastructure for future generations.

I chose the University of Leeds because of its strong reputation in engineering, its excellent teaching, and its emphasis on combining technical knowledge with practical application. While my primary focus is now Civil and Structural Engineering, I continue to maintain a strong interest in transportation and urban infrastructure. I am particularly interested in how innovative structural design, sustainable construction practices, and emerging technologies can help create smarter, more efficient cities. Leeds provides fantastic opportunities to explore these areas through both academic study and engagement with industry.

Alongside my studies, I am actively involved in student life as a member of the Civil Society Committee. This role allows me to contribute to the engineering community, support events and activities for students, and connect with others who share a passion for civil engineering. Being involved in the society has been a rewarding way to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while enhancing my university experience.

One of the things I enjoy most about studying at Leeds is the vibrant student community. The University offers a wide range of societies, sports clubs, volunteering opportunities, and events, making it easy to meet new people and explore interests outside of your degree. The supportive environment, combined with excellent academic resources and career support, helps students build confidence and make the most of their time at university.

I currently live in private accommodation close to both the city centre and campus. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling and exploring different cities across the UK. I find it fascinating to experience different architectural styles, urban environments, and transport systems, as each place offers new perspectives on how engineering and design influence the way people live and interact with their surroundings.
