Hi, I’m Aditri, a final year student studying a bachelor's in Communication and Media at the University of Leeds.

I chose Leeds because of its academic strength, the opportunities offered by my course, and the welcoming community that drew me in right away. Coming from Bhopal, a city in India that feels very similar to Leeds in its size and atmosphere, I instantly felt at home here. Both cities strike that balance of being lively and full of opportunities without ever feeling overwhelming, and that sense of familiarity gave me the perfect environment to settle in and grow.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about my time here has been the people. Through my course and across the wider university, I’ve met so many different people, and the global community on campus is incredible. It never feels like you are out of place; instead, there is always a sense of belonging and of being at home in Leeds. My favourite courses so far have been around communication strategy and media in practice, and I’ve particularly enjoyed how practical the teaching can be, from group projects and presentations to creating real life and campaigns.

Accommodation-wise, I’ve actually lived in the same place for all four years (I know that sounds a bit unusual haha, since most students move into houses at some point). But for me it just worked perfectly. I had amazing flatmates right from the start, the location was convenient, it made sense financially, and the space itself suited me so well that I never felt the need to move. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything by not switching, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Another part of my university life has been the Leeds University Union. I have been part of societies like SASHA (Students Against Sexual Harassment and Assault) and WILS, (Women in Leadership Society) which have been fantastic for developing both professionally and socially. I have also taken on part-time jobs, which have helped me build confidence, develop transferable skills, and balance my academic life with real work experience. As part of these societies, I have hosted countless socials at the Union, but it has also been the place where I hang out with friends between lectures. Spots like the Old Bar quickly became favourites and really made the Union the heart of my student life.

During my third year, I completed a placement at the International Student Office at the University where I worked across event management, project management, and communications. From planning logistics and managing budgets to creating communication plans, the role gave me practical, hands-on experience that connected directly with my degree. It has been a year of immense growth, and I loved every second of it!

When I first arrived in Leeds, the Link to Leeds ambassadors made a big difference in helping me settle. Now I get to do the same for new students, and being a friendly face and offering support has been very rewarding.

When I first arrived in Leeds, the Link to Leeds ambassadors made a big difference in helping me settle. Now I get to do the same for new students, and being a friendly face and offering support has been very rewarding. Alongside this, I have kept space for the things I love outside academics, like going to the gym, travelling, exploring the music scene, and trying out new coffee spots with friends.

Looking back, these four years have been a mix of learning, growth, friendships, and memories that will stay with me forever. Leeds has given me both a home and an opportunity to seek discomfort and I could not have asked for a more enriching university experience!
