Hi, I’m Abbey! I am a 3rd year study abroad student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds. I study Mechanical Engineering at my home university in Canada, but while I am in Leeds, I am taking Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Aerospace Engineering modules.

I love traveling and exploring new places, spending time with friends, and I play competitive curling back home. I follow most North American sports such as Ice Hockey and American Football, as well as Formula 1.

I chose the University of Leeds because it offered me many ways to enhance my degree.

I grew up in a little town outside of Niagara Falls, Canada. I have always wanted the experience of traveling and living abroad. My home university offered the opportunity for me to live in Leeds and complete a year of my degree abroad, so I couldn’t pass up this amazing opportunity!

I chose the University of Leeds because it offered me many ways to enhance my degree. It is ranked very well as an Engineering course in the UK, and I have never seen a school where each stream of engineering has its own building. When I came to visit Leeds before applying, I fell in love with the pedestrian friendly campus, and everything the school had to offer.

The University of Leeds offers over 300 clubs and societies for all interests and hobbies. I am a part of the Mechanical Engineering Society (MechSoc) and the Women in Engineering Society. Both societies put on lots of events throughout the school year such as trivia nights, a 90s themed night, and many more. These societies give me the chance to meet and socialize with new people in engineering and with similar interests.

The city centre, and surrounding areas such as Headingley, offer lots of pubs, cafes, and shops. Some of my favourite places in the city centre include Junkyard Golf, Leeds Corn Exchange, and Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre. The Leeds bus and train station and Leeds Bradford airport make it incredibly easy to take day trips around England and travel throughout Europe on my weekends off from school.

I have met lots of other students from all over the world who are also just starting at Leeds, and I have met most of my closest friends this year living in a hall together.

I live in a catered student accommodation on campus. In your first year at Leeds, I would really recommend living in accommodation, as it has been a great opportunity to meet new people. I have met lots of other students from all over the world who are also just starting at Leeds, and I have met most of my closest friends this year living in a hall together.
