How to pursue your career after your course? How to prepare for job hunting in India? How to tailor your CV according to each company/role? All these questions were answered in a very interactive way during a Global Career week seminar by Mr. Ashutosh Thatte a University of Leeds alumnus was the speaker of the session. The seminar is provided by the University of Leeds to provide useful advice and insights on working in India. It was as really fun session and I’ve documented below all the things that I could grasp from Ashutosh.

A little bit about Ashutosh:

On 24th of November, the University of Leeds held a seminar to guide students who’re looking to work in India after their course. The speaker of the seminar was Mr. Ashutosh Thatte, who works as a  Senior Human Resource Manager for Edelman India and he has previously worked at Aranca, Future Group, Randstad and other companies. He graduated from the University of Leeds in MA Human Resources Management in 2009. He is a seasoned HR professional with over a decade of corporate & generalist HR experience spanning across functions like talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, learning and development, employee engagement and HR operations.

Personal Experience:

While talking about his personal experience during his time in Leeds, he mentioned about the peak of global recession of the year 2008 and mentioned how difficult it was to come across jobs in the UK and the EU. I was able to relate to him as we’re facing a similar situation due to the current pandemic which has affected the economy of almost all the countries. And it’s a bit difficult situation for all of us, but I’d quote Ashutosh as say, “Everything happens for a reason. So, don’t give up!”

He mentioned how important it is to choose the university you’re going to study in, as one should check the modules, talk with the alumni and then apply to the university. The reason behind this is because it highly affects your career and even your own development. Speaking of which he went on to say how studying in a prestigious university like that of the University of Leeds, helps in gaining a job anywhere across the globe.

Journey into employment:

Something which is really important while searching for a job is doing your research on the job market and also be very specific in the sector you’d like to apply for employment. Adapt a specialised approach for job search, such as making a list of companies you’d associate yourself with and where you’d like to work. One of the most important tips shared by him was to obtain references in the companies you’ll be applying for. As it adds a good weight to your application. This can be achieved by using LinkedIn, click on the organisations and check the alumni list. Reach out to the alumni network! Make sure to send a small message while sending a connection request on LinkedIn to your alumni. A small draft of which can be:

Hello,

I’m a fellow UoL alumnus and I’m looking for job opportunity in specific area. I went through your profile and would really appreciate if you can go through my CV and share it with recruiters.

Research a bit about the region and country you’re looking jobs and then start approaching for jobs.

Perspective about job market in India:

The job market has changed and will be changing drastically post pandemic. Reliance on Artificial Intelligent tools change in management tools, new upcoming software and virtual tools along with contract-based opportunities and work from home will be getting prominent. Hiring trends are also changing as the HR and staffing company are shifting towards a social media hiring trend, where people are getting hired based on social media and it’s not just restricted to LinkedIn but also Facebook and Instagram. Soft skills play another important role in a journey of employment. Some of the most important skills are as follows:

  1. Adaptability
  2. Flexibility
  3. Humility
  4. Patience
  5. Tenacious

These skillsets are really important as the current situation is volatile. And you have to be very patient to manage yourself and applications on the current scenario.

Top Tips:

  1. Networking is extremely important
  2. Be patient, adaptable and don’t be hard on yourself
  3. Be proactive

Feel free to contact with him on LinkedIn and don’t forget to add a message with it 

I hope this blog was useful, I know job hunting can be very exhaustive and takes a lot of time and effort, but I hope with these tips may somewhere benefit you to bag the opportunity of your choice.
