The University of Leeds provides career guidance for students such as the Career Centre, Career Events and Joblink. This November, we have global career events specifically for Chinese students and for any students wanting to work in China.

I was honoured to join Midea China’s webinar on the 4th November, hosted by Julien Feasey. The event was divided into three parts: Introduction of the Midea Group, working experience from graduates and advice on writing a CV.

Introduction

The Midea Group is a Chinese electrical appliance manufacturer and technology developer with 15 bases overseas and 34 production plants, hiring over 35,000 employees globally. The Midea Group has made collaboration and partnerships with countries around the globe, including the USA, Japan, Thailand, Germany and Italy. Nowadays, the company specialises in these four main business areas: Consumer Appliance, HVAC, Robotics & Automation and Smart Supply Chain.

The Midea Group has a well-structured Talent Development Pathway for employees who usually start from graduates and eventually develop their career path. As a technological company, Midea strategically focuses on developing AI (Artificial Intelligence), Smart Manufacturing and Big Data. It is a perfect fit for students with Computer Science, Engineering and other scientific related backgrounds. Other than that, Midea also offers many positions for students from Marketing and Management areas.

Work experience from graduate

In the second part of the event we had Josh and Sabrina, from the R&D and the marketing team, to share their experiences working at Midea. Both graduates enjoyed their working experience at Midea, as having a friendly working environment and bonding with those who share similar interests or educational backgrounds. Sabrina is also within one of the Midea Talent Development Programme, ITD (International Talent Development), where she has been working overseas in Thailand for almost a year. The programme aims to improve an employee’s ability in adapting new culture, developing leadership and professional skills.

CV advice

Lastly, Julien provided tips on how to improve our CV. He mentioned that there is a cultural difference in CV style; UK CVs tend to have a clean and clear structure while Chinese companies prefer a colourful layout and including a personal photo. Below shows an idea of what a resume should contain and how to distribute each section.

Another useful tip from Julien was how to customize our CV. Julien emphasized the importance of tailoring our CV to each job application. However, it is time-consuming to write out every resume for every position you apply. The solution is to start with a root resume that contains all your information such as all your education background, work experience and skills. This root resume can be more than two pages. After having a root resume, you can choose and pick the most relevant information to form a new CV. By using this strategy, your resume is going to match up with the job description and let the company know you are the perfect candidate!

I hope this blog has been useful. If you are interested in applying for internships or jobs at Midea, applications will be open in March 2021. For more information, you are welcome to scan the QR code below and join Midea’s Wechat group. Thank you for reading!
