Students always need a reason to party! Especially during these days where everything can feel gloomy and isolated. Additionally, being away from family and friends always takes a toll during tough times. But since we are all in this together, the Leeds University Union (LUU) and the university are not letting anyone stay alone! Hence, the LUU came up with a unique way of partying, which became ‘Virtual Fruity’.

Fruity is the biggest and most popular student night club in Leeds, which is always hosted at LUU. They always have different themed events depending on the time of year, therefore quarantine has become the new theme. In a joint effort between them and the Leeds Student Radio (LSR), they hosted their first ever Virtual Fruity on Friday the 20th of March. People all over the world joined for one night, isolated but together, grooving to their favourite beats.

Around 6,000 people from across 4 continents joined for the night, from current students, alumni to everyone who wanted to join in for the fun. Hence, there was no room left for disappointment. Famous for Friday nights, LSR and LUU, took it up a notch by providing a platform on Radio for everyone to enjoy together. To make it more fruitful, social media pages were created where people can submit their song requests and their favourite songs will be played along with their dedications to people.

Fruity was not just a Friday night party, it’s a culture followed by students across the city of Leeds since years, bringing students from different colleges and universities together under the same roof. Dancing, drinking and singing their young hearts out. Fruity is also well known for its unique style of music across three different clubs which goes as:

  • Stylus: Current Pop
  • Pyramid: RnB
  • Function: Pop and Rock

Allowing people loving different genres to enjoy the night away. Along with mascots, theme parties and giveaways. Fruity has become an emotion for everyone attending it.

LSR and LUU kept the magic of Fruity alive even virtually. People joined their friends via video calls, connected the beautiful sound of different genres of music. A separate playlist is played for pre-booze from 5PM before fruity to give a whole Friday night experience. Attending Virtual Fruity, that Friday night made us forget the current harsh scenario of the world and just dive into our own world of minimum worries, with friends whom we call family away from home.

LSR and LUU are keeping this legacy alive, by hosting Virtual Fruity, every Friday from 9PM to midnight. We really hope, you enjoy a Fruity at least once, when you’re the student of University of Leeds.
