The dream, yet to be fulfilled, has been 16 years in the making. Leeds United, one of the most popular football clubs in England, was relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and has since been striving to return to the top level. Mismanagement, financial concerns, poor team performances, and a pinch of bad luck have all prevented ‘The Whites’ from achieving its objective. The setting, nonetheless, shifted with the signing of my fellow Argentine, Marcelo ‘El Loco’ (‘The Crazy’) Bielsa as manager last season, and the team is now currently top of the English Football Championship League with an unbeatable chance at promotion. It appears the curse may finally be over.

Being a football fan and Bielsa enthusiast myself, attending a Leeds United’s match at the mythical Elland Road stadium was obviously in my bucket list as a Uni of Leeds student. I crossed it off recently during the team’s superb beating of Championship rivals Middlesbrough. The bout ended 4-0, with goals from striker Patrick Bamford, midfielder Mateusz Klich (2), and winger Hélder Costa, after which commentators and fans alike dubbed it Leeds’ finest production of the season.

The atmosphere, albeit the chilly weather, was extraordinary from beginning to end. Around the stadium, which has been the home of Leeds United since the club's formation in 1919, fans gathered together for their ritual beer while sellers offered shirts, scarves, and pins in white, blue and yellow. I even met a group of supporters who had come all the way from Tipperary, in Ireland, just for the game. Talk about loyalty!

Inside Elland Road, the temperature rose right from the start, when the players walked out into the pitch and a crowd of more than 34,000 harmonised the team’s hymn ‘Marching on Together’. Chants of support towards Bielsa and fan-favourite Kalvin Phillips, who many say will be called up to play for England in this year’s European Football Championship, immediately followed. The effusiveness persisted during the match, with people going absolutely crazy with the poker of goals.

Observing Bielsa’s conception of football, Leeds United played, as it has been doing all season, in an offensive and high-pressure fashion and ended up crushing Middlesbrough. Indeed, fans seemed incredibly satisfied with their team’s performance. Despite the cold dark night, many of them waited outside the stadium to congratulate both the players and Bielsa, who kindly saluted and took pictures with everyone who asked.

You can tell the general feeling, after years of despair, is one of hope. With a glorious past, which includes three English league titles, one FA Cup, and a European Cup final, Leeds United is determined to return to the Premier League. Its players, its exceptional manager, and its devoted fan base are doing their part to take the team home.
