Date: 15th of February 2020. Time: 9:07 pm. Location: The edge sports hall, University of Leeds. We are the champions by Queen playing in the background, with cheers going everywhere.

The Middle Eastern and Northern African Society (MENASOC) at the University of Leeds hosted a dodgeball tournament with the respective societies of the universities of Manchester, Sheffield and York. During that event, they had a playlist featuring some of the most popular Arabic songs across all generations, some were back from the 80s such as Shik Shak Shok, and some are the current Arabic bangers that rock every single car and household. Everybody was welcomed to either play or watch with only two rules for the day:

  1. You must wear your team colours to show your support
  2. Have fun and enjoy as much as you can.

But as every Arab knows, we don’t enjoy our nights by just watching sports. During the breaks, there was a photo booth that had a few props for pictures next to it, and you’d get your pictures printed instantly for you. There was also a glitter booth for people to paint their faces, and of course the night wouldn’t be complete without there being FOOD! The societies had a stall available giving away snacks and drinks, and you can also buy some other food they had available. Their menu included delicious foods like Shawerma, Man’oucheh bel Zaatar, and other delicious Arabic dishes.

Back to the sports, the teams played, with some matches being more intense than others. Each university had around 2 teams each, but the final was between University of Leeds team and University of Sheffield team. And as any final match, it was an intense nail biter. The tides kept shifting for both teams, where each team would lose members, then gain some more as the game goes. But then, the match ended with 2 players from the University of Sheffield against one from the University of Leeds, when the unexpected happened. The Leeds team made a powerful comeback and ended up winning the tournament to end the very first one of its kind. Afterwards, all the teams celebrated the event by singing along to some classics that nobody can turn down, then everybody ran home in the rain. Moral of the story, Leeds is always the best.
