Give It A Go Event: Filipino Fiesta!
In Asia, the karaoke culture is a unique, amazing experience where people could sing their hearts out in little karaoke booths and have the best time with friends but, as soon as you go to the Philippines, karaokes are like battlegrounds full of aspiring singers piling up the karaoke's song list to showcase their absolutely mind-blowing talent. You'd be lucky if you get a chance to sing because no one else could take the microphones away from them (If you know someone who grew up in the Philippines, they can tell you I'm not lying!). In every single event, be it birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, holidays like Easter or the day of the dead, it would not be complete without a karaoke and lots of food!! Filipinos have an avid love to sing and eat like there's no tomorrow and its really incredible to know that we can share our culture to people from different countries through the Leeds Universities Filipino Society!
During their give-it-a-go event in Feb, the committee dedicated hours and hours to cook traditional Filipino food which everyone appreciated (there were no leftovers!). There were party games and obviously, karaoke! It was such an enjoyable event with a great atmosphere for welcoming newcomers and connect them with existing members of the society. Through the society, we have created a family whom we can turn to for support, especially when feeling homesick. The committee organises loads of events to create more opportunities for everyone to participate in. Don't be shy to come to one of the events - you'll surely have a lot of fun!
Leeds Universities Filipino Society was established for those interested in Filipino culture to meet each other while studying, working, and living in Leeds, and to showcase the society with the rest of the local community. The society is open for everyone: student or non-students. The society keeps everyone up to date through Facebook and Instagram accounts.
