The Leeds University Union (LUU) is a charity formed by and for students. Their staff, volunteers and elected officers do their best for organizing a large variety and fun activities for the students of the University of Leeds. These activities are very good opportunities for making new friends, learning new skills, having fun with your buddies and exploring new places not only Leeds and Yorkshire but also other places in the UK, giving you the chance to experience the very welcoming and unique British culture. With LUU you can take part in many activities in and off campus. The most important thing is to have fun and love your time in Leeds!

One of the most recent trips organized by LUU was a day trip to Durham and the Beamish museum. We all gathered in front of the Parkinson Building where the buses were waiting for us. After a one-hour ride, we arrived in Durham, a charming historic city. You can visit the botanic gardens, buy food and souvenirs in the Durham Indoor Market and visit the fascinating Castle and Cathedral. My favorite was the Cathedral. Is an astonishing UNESCO World Heritage jewel, built in 1093 where you will experience a peaceful historic atmosphere. Or, if you are a big Harry Potter fan like me, you will go crazy when walking around those same corridors were Gryffindor’s Quidditch team walked, and see the areas where memorable scenes of Harry Potter Sources’ Stone and Chamber of Secrets were filmed. Do you remember that place where poor little Ron made himself regurgitate slugs after trying to curse Draco Malfoy? Or when Hedwig flies from Harry’s arm in a beautiful snowy garden? Or, when second-year students learned about the Chamber of Secrets from Professor McGonagall? All that happened in Durham Cathedral! What a memorable visit!

After that, the bus took us to the Beamish Museum, a lovely place for going back in time and experience life of North East England in the 1820s, 1900s, and 1940s. You can visit the old town taking the old tram or bus, you can buy delicious chocolates in the picturesque candy-shop, visit the house of the dentist in town and see his instruments, you can take a historic picture with your friends in a 1900s style, you can visit old Barclay’s bank and much more!

You will love your time at Leeds and have the opportunity of enjoying more day-trips like this one with comfort and at affordable student-prize! But also, there are many activities that you can do for free with LUU - have a look at the website for more details! Hope to see you soon here in Leeds!
