My name is Xena, and I’m from the vibrant city of Jakarta, Indonesia. Before coming to the University of Leeds, I studied Information Systems at BINUS University, one of Indonesia’s top universities known for its global reputation and innovative IT approach. Studying there gave me a solid foundation in digital systems and management, and after graduation, I started working as an Associate Product Manager in a tech start-up focused on the maritime industry. In that role, I learned everything from product planning to execution and even got a first-hand look at the unique challenges of digital transformation in a traditional industry. It was an amazing experience that made me want to dive deeper into digital innovation on a global scale.
When I started looking into masters programs, I wanted a course that combined information systems with management, but with a fresh angle on digital transformation. That’s when I found the University of Leeds. I’d heard a lot about Leeds as a student-friendly city, and while researching programs, I came across the MSc Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation (MISDI) program. It was a perfect fit! This course is like a “best of” album—it has all the things I’m interested in: information systems, management, and a bit of IT, all focusing on how digital transformation can really make an impact.
The University of Leeds offers pretty much everything you need to make life easier when you’re new in town.
And let me tell you, the support for international students here is *chef’s kiss*. This assurance was invaluable, as moving to a foreign country alone can be a daunting experience, but Leeds made the transition so smooth that it almost felt like home from the start. From practical advice to academic support, they’ve got you covered.
The university has some standout features that make life here awesome. My personal favourites are the night bus and Leeds University Union (LUU). It’s so nice knowing there’s a safe way to get back home late at night. And then there’s LUU, which is like this never-ending hub of events, clubs, and activities that make it super easy to meet people and make friends. I’ve met so many great people, and I’m constantly finding new things to do.
Coming here alone was a bit scary, but the social scene at LUU made all those fears disappear.
Oh, and let’s talk about the university libraries — especially Laidlaw Library. It's open 24/7! There’s even a silent study room for when you need that deep-focus mode. I practically live there during exam season, and it’s honestly the best place to hunker down and get things done. On top of that, the university is surrounded by green spaces where you can relax or catch up on some reading. It’s a lovely balance between intense study and calm surroundings.
The university offers tons of opportunities for growth too. Whether it’s workshops, hands-on case studies with real-world problems, there’s always something new to learn. And the professors are highly engaging, approachable and supportive. University of Leeds is also create this fantastic, structured environment with resources like Minerva (our online platform) that makes staying on top of things much easier. It’s pretty much the perfect setup for international students like me, who might feel a bit overwhelmed at first.
I love exploring Leeds (and its student discounts, haha). The city has so much to offer—beautiful parks, amazing art spaces, and even some hidden spots that are perfect for a peaceful weekend. My go-to place? The Leeds Central Library. It’s not just a library; it’s right next to the Leeds Art Gallery and the Tiled Hall Café, so it’s like a mini cultural adventure every time I go. I love spending time there, reading my favorite books or writing, especially since it’s close to my accommodation and located in the city centre! There are plenty of entertaining places in the centre to enjoy at night too!
I chose Leeds because, coming from a bustling city like Jakarta, I wanted a place that had a city vibe without the overwhelming pace. Leeds is perfect for that! It’s lively, friendly, and has a ton of peaceful and fun spots where you can escape when you need a break from it all. Plus, people here are incredibly welcoming—I felt at home right away.
As for where I live, I stay at The Refinery, a private student accommodation that’s between the Leeds University Business School (LUBS) and the city centre. It’s only a 15-minute walk to either spot, so it’s super convenient. The Refinery itself is great—modern, comfy, and a perfect mix of social and study spaces. I’ve met a lot of other students here, so it’s like a mini community within the bigger Leeds family.
So, if you’re considering the University of Leeds or just want to know more about what it’s like to study here, don’t hesitate to reach out! You can email me xena-link@leeds.ac.uk or find me on UniBuddy. I’m always happy to chat and share my experiences. Hope to see you at Leeds soon!
