Hello! I’m Intan, currently pursuing my MSc in Water, Sanitation, and Health Engineering at the University of Leeds. Before arriving here, I completed my undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology. My academic journey has been driven by a deep interest in water and wastewater engineering and a commitment to public health. When it came time to pursue my Masters, I was drawn to Leeds for its global reputation and outstanding research standards in my field.
I first came across the University of Leeds while exploring top-tier MSc programmes. Leeds stood out not only as one of the prestigious Russell Group universities but also for its research-intensive, world-class education. The university’s impressive rankings—especially being among the top 10 for civil engineering in the UK and its placement in the global top 100—solidified my choice.
I knew that Leeds would provide the perfect environment to advance my technical skills while encouraging a real-world approach to solving critical issues.
Since joining, my experience here has been nothing short of remarkable. I’ve met inspiring friends, supportive peers, and faculty members who genuinely care about their students’ success. Each step of the learning process has been engaging, especially through interactive classes that encourage critical thinking and hands-on problem-solving. My course has allowed me to delve into the complexities of providing safe water and sanitation on a global scale, a mission that has been close to my heart since my undergraduate days. I’ve always believed that access to safe water is a fundamental right, and my passion for advocating for this cause has only deepened during my studies. My lecturers are incredibly supportive, often going above and beyond to make the content both impactful and relevant.
One of my favourite aspects of the university is how it actively promotes a well-rounded student experience. Leeds goes beyond academics by offering countless ways to get involved in social clubs, societies, and organised trips across the UK. The campus itself is a beautiful, compact space, and everything is within a short walking distance. This makes it easy to connect with friends, explore new areas, and soak up the vibrant campus atmosphere. Leeds truly feels like a second home, and I’m grateful to be part of such a welcoming community.
As a city, Leeds has so much to offer. Its diversity and lively, student-friendly vibe create an atmosphere that is both dynamic and inclusive. Leeds combines the energy of city life with the peaceful charm of nature, showcasing stunning parks like Roundhay Park and Temple Newsam.

I live in a privately rented house that’s just a stone’s throw from my school (literally). This proximity has been incredibly convenient, and I share the house with three other Malaysians, which has made the experience feel even more like home. We get to celebrate festivals together and have cooking sessions where we enjoy all the flavours we miss. It’s been a wonderful way to stay connected to our roots while exploring a new culture and community.
Outside of my studies, I’m an avid reader and love the way books allow me to experience countless lives and perspectives. I’m also passionate about travel and discovering new places. Leeds itself offers plenty of opportunities for exploration, and I plan to make the most of my time here by discovering as much of the UK and hopefully Europe, as possible. Since arriving, I’ve taken numerous trips to places like York, Cambridge, and the Lake District, all organised by the university and societies like Get Out, Get Active.
In the short time I've been in Leeds, I've truly grown as a person. Moving to a new country and stepping into a vibrant, diverse community has encouraged me to open up and embrace new experiences. I find myself more willing to step out of my comfort zone, whether
