Hi there! My name is Amina, and I am a 2nd year student studying International Relations. I moved to Leeds from Liverpool last year and I’ve never looked back! I am in love with the city itself and the University and couldn’t imagine myself going to any other University.

the University’s membership in the Russell Group association, clearly indicates the prestigious status of the university and the significance of attending there, and how this will benefit me when looking for graduate jobs.

When I was in Year 12, I decided I wanted to go into something politics based at university, mainly because I was studying Politics at A-levels and the whole concept around it really fascinated me. The part that fascinated me the most however, was the politics of the USA and the whole structure of the US government. This was especially interesting as I was learning about it during the time that Donald Trump was president and he had nominated Amy Coney Barrett as a Judge on the supreme court, which had caused mass outcry in the country. These events in turn made me realise that Global politics fascinate me far more than UK politics had done during my time of studying Politics

During my first ever semester of university I had the opportunity to investigate the colonisation of Africa and the politics surrounding it, which was incredibly fascinating. My favourite part of first year was investigating the rapid rise of China and looking at how it has affected international stability positively and negatively. This part of the course interested me the most and made me feel like I made the right decision to choose international relations as my Programme of Study.

I have made so many amazing friends during my time here so far.

I was deciding on my options for universities, the University of Leeds was always my top option. This was mainly due to the respectable reputation that the university has upheld for a very long time, especially due to its Redbrick University status. Furthermore, the University’s membership in the Russell Group association, clearly indicates the prestigious status of the university and the significance of attending there, and how this will benefit me when looking for graduate jobs.

The University of Leeds has without a doubt surpassed my expectations. I have made so many amazing friends during my time here so far and have taken part in all levels of university life. Before coming attending university I was nervous that I would struggle to make friends or that my time would be lonely, but it has been the complete opposite!

Joining societies has been a big factor in making me feel more comfortable about settling into university and finding friends! I love the societies that the university has to offer, as there is something there for everyone to join! Society events have also given me the opportunity to take part in events that I normally wouldn’t go to and have made me grow into a much more confident and outgoing person, as I can interact with a variety of people from across the UK and the world.

Some of my favourite things about the city itself is the wide range of things there are to do and explore! During my free time I love to explore the Charity shops in Headingley! Some days I’ll end up spending hours just trying things on in the changing rooms. It’s a fun way to pass time and it’s so close to the university so it’s easy to walk there. Another one of my favourite places to visit in Leeds is the Trinity centre. It is in the city centre and has a wide range of shops to go into. or walking. The public transport system in Leeds is also amazing and easy to use so that would be another convenient and inexpensive way to get around the city.
