Paulina Pawlak

My name is Paulina and I am studying Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence – currently doing my Year in Industry (Placement year) for BMW UK. Coming from Poland, I always wanted to experience studying in the UK, as I love open-minded people and I really admire that in the UK there are a lot of international students – you can literally meet people from all over the world. I was looking also at Shanghai Ranking and Guardian Ranking, where University of Leeds is really high.

At the University of Leeds, I like the campus and lecturers the most, also the Leeds University Union , which I find the best one in the whole of the UK. Everything is in one place – if you need some good food just go to the Union and choose between Wok&Go, Refectory, Pastries etc, if you need a sketchbook just go to Essentials, if you want to chill out with friends, we have Old Bar and Terrace, for good coffee go to Common Ground. Everything you need, is just next to the place where you have lectures. Even if you need to get to the city centre really quickly this can be done by using the bus or just a 15 minute walk.  What I love about Leeds is its location – you can get to York and Manchester with discounted train fares. We also have an airport with really cheap connections to Ireland or Spain for example. You don’t have to spend a fortune, as in Leeds there are many places to discover, like Kirkstall and many beautiful parks. I chose the University of Leeds after seeing how many societies are here. We have above 300 societies, from kickboxing to Women in Engineering and Computing, you can really broaden your horizons here.

Choosing Leeds, I also looked at Study Abroad opportunities – there are a lot of destinations you can go. And if you’re not interested in studying abroad, go for a placement year, that is also great chance to develop your skills.

The support you receive here is great, the Lecturers are always very responsive to emails whenever you want to ask them about something. Also the support from non-academic staff is really reassuring.

I chose Computer Science, because I’m really keen on AI. Lecturers are ready to show you interesting things and even more if you ask them. My coursemates are passionate people, that are active and it really motivates me. We have different events from Computing Society, like Google Hash Code. If you don’t like something, contact or become one of the School rep’s – they can really change a lot. We have also seminars with guests and if you’re interested in robotics, there is Robotics Lab, that is really successful.

After those 2 years, I know how great is it to be at University – I had a chance to work in multiple positions such as Student Digital Champion for Digital Education Service at University which gave me an opportunity to become JISC Student Partner. I also worked Maths Student Ambassador for Laidlaw Library and Open Days Ambassador for School of Computing. What is more, I also used help offered from Engineering Employability Team while getting placement and internships, e.g. for NHS Digital.

This year I live in a small city next to London where I complete my Year in Industry – last two years I lived in catered accommodation, Lyddon Hall, and private rented accommodation. It give me full insight into how it is to live in University halls but also what to remember while looking for your own place.

Please do contact me if you have any questions!
