PRIDE

Written by Najwa Nor Ikhsan

Leeds Pride took place on Sunday, 5th of August. The sun graced us and the day was definitely beautiful. Thousands of people from all over the place came to support one of the largest Pride events in the UK. Pride is an event that celebrates the LGBT+ community. The atmosphere in the city centre was one that was filled with love. It made us all feel giddy with excitement and happiness. Music blasted from the stereo with everyone singing Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. The lyrics were empowering. They told everyone to be comfortable in their own skin and be proud of their identity.

Rejoice and love yourself today,
‘Cause baby you were born this way – Lady Gaga

A sea of people in colourful outfits, body glitter and face paint marched through the streets of Leeds. Colourful flags were everywhere. Families, friends and dogs joined the parade, which started at 2pm in Millennium Square. Big companies such as Sainsbury’s, Asda and Nando’s also participated. A variety of communities such as the West Yorkshire Police also joined. The parade lasted for more than hour. It was entertaining and empowering. Everyone cheered as the parade passed through us. The crowd cooed as babies in strollers and dogs wearing pride collars passed through. There were people in roller blades and young people dancing with pom-poms.

Here’s some snippets of the parade! Come and join the parade next year. There’s always room for everyone.
